How to communicate with Thunderbird and MS Outlook to access the emails

Hello:
I found it interesting in Google Destop Search that it can search emails in Outlook and Thunderbird. So anyone has an idea of which protocol I can use to communicate with the these two email applications. with MAPI? but how?
