How to check GC is running or not

Hi
my application is running on sun V440 with tomcat 5.3 and i m facing java.lang.outofmemory error when i check the server log . then let me know how to check the garbage collector is running or not.I m using following parameters for our application Xmx=3584m, xms=3584m,
and Xss=256m .Pls let me know
how to remove java.lang.outofmemory.
how to check GC is running or not in our application.
