How to change the width(columnSpan) of a popup LOV dynamically with the selected item

Dear APEX gurus, I have a webpage with 5 popup LOVs on the top, I want the width of the LOV change with its selected item.

like when the selected item is short, I want the width (column span) of LOV to change with it.

is there a way to achieve this? I guess JavaScript and CSS are involved? thanks in advance.
