How to change the console resolution / frame buffer / or font size

I've spent too many hours researching and testing how to change the frame buffer to get the OVM server resolution higher. My monitor supports 1680 x 1050 and it seems that the default resolution is around 800 x 600, so the text is HUGE! I've tried setting vga=XXX a bunch of times, each to no effect. I tried looking into changing the font size, but I'm too much of a newbie to know the exact syntax and my searching didn't help much. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
