How to change screen resolution to 1600x900 in Linux

hi installed different flavours of linux on my laptop but i am not able to find 1600x900 resolution. Can anybody tell me how to Modify that ..i tried modify xorg.conf file in /ETC/X11 Directory
but i am still not getting the resolution i wanted. Any help greatly appreciated.
