How to automate RMAN to backup on a schedule?(Linux)

cayenneApr 1 2009 — edited Apr 6 2009
Hello all,
I'm new to RMAN. I've been going through the books, and have started to get a good grip on RMAN commands and all, but, the one thing I don't see in the literature (so far at least) is how you set up RMAN after it is configured with defaults, to run on a schedule for doing backups?

Do you have to create RMAN scripts and run them at a cron job or something? I was thinking there was an internal Oracle RMAN scheduling apparatus, but, I've seen nothing of the sort.

I'm wanting to backup to disk, and then to tape incrementally most likely...I can do this by hand, but, how can I automate this?

It appears that the tape system we have on many machines is Veritas Netbackup. I don't know much about it..reading through it on the OraclePress book. I have no documentation coming into this new project I'm on.
I don't know how they have backups scheduled to run on some boxes....wanting to find out how they do it and see the schedule without asking here at the jobsite if possible....figure it out for myself you know?

Am I missing it somewhere for the RMAN scheduling system?

Any suggestions, links greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,

cayenne

ps. Is there a different way for windows? I'm currently only on a RHEL environment, but, I'd like to know how to do it on windows too.
