How result_cache_max_size parameter works

Can you please explain the result_cache_max_size parameter in oracle 11g. If we increase or decrease this paramater value what will be the result in terms of performance..

sga is 3GB
result_cache_max_size is 5mb
result_cache_mode is manual
OS is AIX5.3
Oracle version is 11.2.0.1
