How many Instances can a DBA manage?

I realize this is a question like "how long is a piece of string" and there are many variables influencing the 'ideal' number, but I am preparing a document to be presented to senior management on DBA staffing levels, and would like to present some comparative data.

If you are a full-time DBA, could you please give me some idea of the number of instances you manage, or if you are part of a DBA group, the number of DBA's and the number of instances.
