How HINTS are useful in Orcle 11g?

Hi,

I am wondering if HINTS are still userful in Oracle 11g (R2). Somene said Oralce 9 onwards, Oracle itself pickups best path to use SQL. Hint wont work? I am confues on this.

Can any one help me on this topic, if HINTS are still useful or no need to user HINTS to optimize query.
