How do I upgrade a 10g database to 11g migrating to new hardware?

R_BoberAug 1 2012 — edited Aug 6 2012
I have an old HPUX RISC based server hosting an Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4) database. We are standing up new hardware (HP Itanium) and wish to migrate the database from the RISC server to the Itanium server and upgrade the database to 11g during the process. Our intention is to do a fresh install of 11g on the new hardware, and to NOT install 10g on the new hardware. Can I restore the 10g database to the new hardware AFTER the 11g software installation and then execute the database upgrade? I see in the instructions that there are prerequisite scripts to check the 10g database - I assume that they run in 10g, and could be done on the old server with the database in place there. We anticipate running these servers and databases in parallel for at least a month, perhaps longer. I would REALLY be happy if there was a way to accomplish this WITHOUT installing 10g on the new server!!

Any ideas?
