How do I determine my apex Home Url?

Hi all,

What is my home url if I can launch my apex web login page using : > http://prod1:8081/apex/f?p=100

I assume it is http://prod1:8081/apex ???

But why is that the docs always mention about : > http://machine.domain:port/pls/apex

Is the "pls" dir here default and mandatory?

Why is that if I put "pls" the web page can not be displayed or some error is showing?
