How can I set the background color of a column in an IG in Apex 18.1?

To make it more apparent which related columns need to be updated in an IG application, I'd like to color the background of the columns. So I can document for the user, in situation A, enter the blue columns, for situation B, enter the green columns... The colors don't need to be dynamic--the columns will always be the same color.
I see in the app builder, on the grid columns under 'Appearance', there is 'CSS Classes'; also, under 'Advanced' there is 'CSS Classes' and 'Custom Attributes'...but nowhere can I find an explanation how to use those attributes. Is there some documentation that explains and maybe gives examples of how these can be used?
