how can i modify table field from char to varchar

hi i what to modify my table column from char to varchar2
SQL> ALTER TABLE CFG_OFFICE
MODIFY(OFFICECODE VARCHAR2(5 BYTE))
ALTER TABLE CFG_OFFICE
MODIFY(OFFICECODE VARCHAR2(5 BYTE))
Error at line 3
ORA-02267: column type incompatible with referenced column type
