How can I check combo box value is null or not?

Hi ,
I have one doubt ..

How can I check combo box value is null or empty or valid data?

actually, for that combo box options getting from database,
default it is null, at the time of click it should check it is null or empty or valid data. if it is null or empty it is show alert message....

can U help me? please........
