I have a 2 CPU Sun 220R running Solaris 8 that vmstat -S 5 shows run
queue spikes from 0 to the mid 40's. See output below. I would expect
to see the cpu id at 0 but never do. There are no processes blocked or
waiting on IO. iostat shows very low wait and busy. sr, de are 0 or
low so I don't have a memory issue. Also, user time is consistantly >
sys time. There are a ton of processes on this box, several have
very high execution times as reported by ps -ef. Why does vmstat show
run queues > # processors but cpu id is not 0? Given this scenario is
there any quantative way to determine what will have the most impact;
ie. adding more cpu's vs. using faster cpu's (only way to profile
applications?)
