Hide / Show Apex 4.0 Button using JavaScript

Hi,
How can i hide / show a button using javascript. I'm trying to hide a button called P1_UPDATE:
document.getElementById("P1_UPDATE").style.visibility = "hidden";
I get the this error:
document.getElementById("P1_UPDATE") is null.
