Java SE (Java Platform, Standard Edition)

I'm new to these forums and very confused on how everything works around here, so if i'm posting in the wrong forum or something like that, pls forgive and let me know where and how i can else where. : )

Okey now that i've said hello I was hoping someone might be able to help me out of a predicament. I currently do Java 2 at school on the grade 11 standard and I have recently been working on a school project that requires that i access an 'Microsoft Access' Database to input, delete, update data and so on.

Im currently using Ready to program as my java run time environment (ide) and I'm not 100% sure, but i beleive im using java version 1.2.0. However I was told that I would require version 1.3.0 to allow my program to access a database
(using SQL) , and as of yet, my program has not been able to access the database.

My dilemma is that i don't know how to install version 1.3.0 safely. The last time i tried downloading version 1.4.2 my internet went hey wire and I was lucky that my dad (somehow) got it working again.

Are there any special requirements for installing version 1.3.0? And can anyone tell me how to Install it?
