HFM multi level consolidation currency translation with historic rates

hyp big beeMay 17 2013 — edited May 21 2013
I was working on HFM application support and have a curiosity regarding currency translation during
consolidatiion. There are 1 avg, 1 closing and several other rates(presume historical rates).
The historical rates are as investment rate, equity rate(say separate rate for preferred stock and other share capital), reserves and reatained earnings rate etc.

So do i conclude separate historical rates are maintained like this based on investments and equities?
How to work out this(for translation and calculation of CTA at account level and custom level only for such historic rates segregation). Can someone elaborate with an example of multi-level consolidation.Although these rates are not there in client excel packs which they were using prior to HFM implementation)

I am clear about how closing and average rate is used in HFM.
