Help to do DB Health check manually.

As I am new to DBA activities, I would like to learn How to maintain DB Healthy?
What are all the Preliminary step we need to carried out?
Based on the output, what are all the futher steps need to be carried out?
How to validate the Tablespaces? If we give 'AUTO EXTEND ON', Then we do need to check further?
Do we have any option in DB like Defragmentation in Windows OS to make it perfect?
MY DB Details : Oracle 10g / Toad for Oracle Base[Doesn't have DB Health check option]
Kindly do the needful Guidance / Help on my above requirement.
