Has the 32 bit platform been discontinued for JDeveloper 12.1.3?

unknown-7404Jun 26 2014 — edited Jun 26 2014

This thread was created to avoid hijacking this similar thread:

https://community.oracle.com/message/12509733#12509733 (when will the new release of Jdeveloper come including ADF mobile framework ?)

I had responded to that thread and inadvertently ask my own question:

Is 32 bit still going to be supported?

Timo Hahn responded thusly:

If you check the certification matrix Oracle JDeveloper and ADF 12c (12.1.3) Supported Systems you see that only 64 bit windows systems are supported. You can try the generic installer which might run inn 32 bit windows.

Hence this thread for my specific question.

The certification matrix for 12.1.3 lists only 64 bit systems. It isn't clear if 32 bit system support just hasn't been released yet or if Oracle has now abandoned support for the 32 bit platform for JDev framework and the extension SDK.

We have been trying to create and work with sql developer extensions for several years but there have always been issues; most notably the lack of sufficient documentation for the changes between sql developer and the Jdeveloper framework it is based on and the lack of any official source for the XSD schema files needed.

The latest issue was the switch to the new OSGI framework by both products.

Sql developer 4.0.2.15.21 is supported on 32 bit Windows and uses the Jdeveloper 12.1.3 framework which until today was NOT publicly released.

I have posted a question in this forum and the sql developer forum regarding an Extension problem when using the JDev 12.1.2 framework and Sql Dev.

https://community.oracle.com/thread/3566788

That sample code I provide in that thread appears to indicate one of the following:

1. a bug in sql developer version 4.0.2.15.21

2. a bug in the Jdeveloper framework 12.1.3

3. an incompatibility between that sql dev version and the 12.1.2 extension SDK framework my sample uses (since 12.1.3 wasn't available

So I'm trying to understand what JDeveloper and Sql Developer extensions are going to be supported and on what platforms.

If the Jdev 12.1.3 framework is NOT going to be supported for 32 bit that likely means that extensions for 32 bit versions of Sql Developer are not going to be supported either.

But that version of Sql developer is publicly available for 32 bit systems and its architecture makes heavy use of extensions. So it itsn't clear at all if the public at large can develop extensions for 32 bit sql developer if the Jdev 12.1.3 framework isn't available on that target.

One of the issues with using JDev to create sql developer extensions was that sql developer was NOT available as a target platform for deployment.

I don't expect Oracle to announce a delivery date for a 32 bit JDev framework version. But since the 64 bit version was just publicly released and since Sql Dev supports 32 bit platforms and uses SOME version (perhaps internal) of the 12.1.3 framework I would hope that Oracle could at least tell us if a decision has been made to abandon support for the 32 bit framework or not.

If not then any third-party extensions will only be able to support 64 bit versions of JDeveloper and Sql Developer.
