GUI Acess MySQL Database

Developers,

I am about to start a project which needs to remain connected to a database at all times. So far i have been unable to find out how to execute SQL statements from a GUI client who is not on the same machine. Also how does authentication work - presumably a remote client cant just access all databases on the server.

Lastly any suggesstions for port - numbers would be great.
