GSD not starting

We installed Oracle 10g RAC multiple times.
When VIPCA was run, VIPCA hangs at 65% (can be because of the number of retries and time between each retry) while starting GSD. Then it says "GSD cannot be started on the local node" and VIPCA moves forward to start GSD on the other node where it again fails to start GSD. After installation is complete, "crs_stat -t" shows that GSD is OFFLINE on both the nodes. Did any body had the same proble? AIX is the OS. Came to know GSD does not have role to play as in oracle 9i.
