Growing log files with multi-master replication. HELP!!

We have a pair of DS 5.2 sp4 servers installed and configured as multi-masters
I am noticing a continual growth in the log files.
I have set the max age to be 7 days for the changelog from the Configuration/Data/Replication dialog.
I am reasonably happy about the .db3 file residing in
/data10/ids52_4/mm1/slapd-mm1/changelogdb folder. I guess this .db3 file will get the change entries removed as the changes get old.
However, on every change made to the directory the file
/data10/ids52_4/mm1/slapd-mm1/db/log.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
expands.
I am seeing several of these log.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx files in the db folder. They are worryingly large and plentiful.
Are these log files also subject to the replication max age setting?
Also, what is the best way to shrink the changelog database??
And, just what files comprise the multi-master changelog mechanism... where and what files should I be monitoring???
