$GRID_HOME & $GRID_BASE for 11g

Dear RAC Experts,

Basically i am an Oracle core DBA.

Now i am learning RAC step by step.

I have a question.

I gone through S.O.P of 11g RAC Installation on RHEL 5.x.

One point clearly mentioned

$GRID_BASE should *NOT * be under $GRID_HOME

# mkdir -p /u01/app/grid ==> $GRID_BASE

# mkdir -p /u01/product/11.2.0/grid_home ==> $GRID_HOME

May i know exact reason ?
