getting most recent date

Hi,

how do I get the most recent records based on the date?

For example I have many transactions, but for each type of transction I want the lasted one.

J Smith transfer 6/12/99
J Smith Promotion 2/23/00
J Smith Retired 12/01/02

How do I only get the last record?
