Geodetic Data Across the International Dateline

matt schellSep 15 2008 — edited Sep 24 2008
Hi,

Am I correct in thinking that there is currently no way to build and use geodetic data, aside from MBR query geometries, that cross the international dateline, + or - 180 degrees longitude?

I see some ancient posts suggesting that this might be possible in future releases, and I've had success with using geodetic MBRs, as documented here:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B14255_01/sdo_cs_concepts.htm#sthref556

Unfortunately an MBR is problematic in the case of an area of interest that is quite large and defined in projected coordinates, for example a projected rectangle defined at all four corners that roughly covers the U.S. state of Alaska. The distortion is so great (the thing is more like a curvy trapezoid on the globe), when converted to a geodetic MBR, the resulting MBR covers part of the continental US but not all of the state of Alaska.

What I would like to be able to do is add shapepoints along the projected rectangle, spanning the international dateline, and use that shape as a query geometry.

Thanks for any advice!
Matt
