General questions about Oracle and .Net

783956Apr 17 2011 — edited Apr 18 2011
Hello,

I am in the process of learning how to access and manipulate an Oracle database using Windows and .Net. I am just starting and admittedly a bit lost.

I came across the book "Pro .NET programming" by Mark Williams. I am considering purchasing it but, I am a little bit concerned that since it was printed in 2004, it may be out of date. Any comments on this issue are welcome as well as opinions on whether this book would be a good place to start.

I also came across the book "Pro ODP.NET for Oracle Database 11g" which is more recent.

I am guessing that ODP is the Oracle specific access layer that "supersedes" the generic layer that is ADO.NET. Is this what I should be learning and if so, can anyone tell me if Mark Williams uses the ODP or the generic ADO.NET.

Lastly, all recommendations are welcome. I would be particularly pleased to find a book that shows good techniques, how to do it right. I find this particularly important in the .NET environment where there are so many different ways of accomplishing the same thing but only a few are what could be considered "production quality".

Out of curiosity, how common is the combination of Oracle and .Net out there for someone who is interested in getting a job with those skills ?

Thank you very much for your help, it is much appreciated,

John.
