gateway for RAC interconnect

do I need a router (physical device) to set up Oracle RAC 11.2 with 2 nodes in terms of defining default gateway in NIC settings?
or is it possible without it, e.g. defining somehow routes locally on both nodes?
I could use the corporation router (default gateway), but IMO:
1. it looses the security/privacy
2. it causes packets to run somewhere and back instead of locally (which is faster I think)
I have currently 2 machines, shared storage and 1GbE switch for interconnect. I thought it's enough, but I am not good at networks...
Would anyone advice something in network RAC configuration to make it running?
