Frame.setVisible(true) taking a LONG time

In displaying a Frame composed of 500 or so Labels,
setVisible(true) call is taking 20-30 SECONDS to display the Frame.
This happens on both XP and Suse/Linux.
With the MSVM, it only takes about ONE second.
Any theories or suggestions would be greatly appreciated !
