Forms 10 and date format

Hi all, I have an item on a form that has the datatype of date and has the format mask HH24:MI. It is giving me the error FRM-50002 Month must be between 1 and 12 when I try to tab off the field. This form worked ok in forms 6i but not in forms 10.

Has anyone come across this or have an idea what I can do to get around this as I need to validate the input as a valid time.
