Font Apex Icon colors

I am color coding icons on links and buttons to relay status information in an upgrade from Apex 5.1 to Apex 19.2.

Unlike in Font Awesome where the color attribute fills the entire icon, the color attribute in font-apex icons seems to only color the outline. Is there a modifier, class or some other way to fill the icon, or can I override the icon set and use font-awesome?
