Firefox 3.0 Crashes with Forms 10g
Today I noticed a big rollout of Firefox version 3.0, so I thought I would go ahead and install it (on my Windows Vista platform). BIG MISTAKE! (Checking the Mozilla Firefox forum, I see many others reporting big problems, too.)
It installed just fine. I could visit various web sites ok. Then I fired up OC4J to see if I could run Web Forms 10g. Once that was running, I clicked on the Web Forms 10g startup link, and Firefox crashed immediately.
Ok, being accustomed to trying different things, I tried starting forms using the new IE configuration, adding ?config=jpi to the startup URL. That led me down the path of installing java JRE 1.4 (I believe--not the latest ver 1.6). But no luck. Firefox 3.0 still crashed.
Ok, that shouldn't be too much of a problem (so I thought). I would just run Windows Vista "System Restore", getting back to an earlier software version. No luck -- Firefox would not even start -- it crashes instead.
So I found a download for Firefox 2.0.0.14 on the web, and tried installing. It says it installs just fine. But no luck starting Firefox -- it crashes.
I noted that Firefox does not show up in the standard Windows Uninstall Programs list. But there is a "helper.exe" in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\uninstall. So I tried running it, and it reports that it has uninstalled Firefox sucessfully.
Re-installing 2.0.0.14 did not fix the problem. Uninstalling again, and then choosing an earlier System Restore point does not work. I am out of ideas -- trying to start Firefox just returns a Microsoft Windows message:
"Firefox has stopped working. A problem caused th program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
What a mess!!!
