File format of exportCollectionActionListener ADF 11g

I am using exportcollectionactionlistener on a table to export its data to excel. The file generated is html and not xls eventhough the extension is xls and the excelHTML is selected in the configuration.

The output file starts with the following segment:
<html xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"><head><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml><x:ExcelWorkbook><x:ExcelWorksheets><x:ExcelWorksheet>
and ends with
</body></html>

How to make the exportCollectionActionListener return a proper xls file?
