File allocation size, usage, and extendability

Hi there,
I am learning the ropes of trying to become a DBA. I have asked a rather loaded question in another post but seems that its all a bit to broad so I want to ask the questions rather one by one and then delve deeper into the subject. As by the subject line I would like to know about file allocation size, usage and its extendability. Is there a query I can run to check this and also could you point me in the correct direction of the documentation or material I could read about this.
