fetching last N rows in a table

Hi I need to fetch last N rows from a table. The rows are the last updated/inserted records in the table based on the date column in that.
I used ORDERBY function. but it takes long time as there are many record in the table ... Is there any other solution to do this faster ??
Please help me.
