Fast Alternatives to RMI

I m developing a ERP server module for JBoss and Since RMI is not the best solution for long-distance communication and slow bandwidth
(due to historic reasons - e.g. CORBA compatibility).

so it is very inefficient and has not been designed for long-distance, slow-bandwidth communication.
RMI performs about 6 request-response-cycles per method call.
This is especially bad on long-distances with high latencies Additionally, RMI can not be encrypted.

does any one knows a open source project which already using a fast RMI alternative?
