Extremely slow printing from AS using file and printer server on Windows

Jeroen DhaenensAug 17 2005
Hello,

We are migrating our system from 6i C/S to 10g on the web.

We now face the following problem: When printing directly to a printer from forms using a file-and printer server (desname=\\SERVERNAME\PRINTERNAME), the report job on the Reports Server can take up to 6 minutes and even more between being queued and being finished (=actually printed).
However, when we install the same printer using IP on the Application/Reports Server and print the same report using DESNAME=LOCAL_PRINTER_NAME, it only takes 6-7 seconds between being queued and being finished. However, we can not install all our printers locally because we have to many.

We tested this with different printers and even on an OC4J-setup and we can reproduce this all the time. Only when the printers are on a really fast network connection with the report server, printing directly using a file-and printer server is fast enough.

However, we do not believe this is a network problem. When looking in the report cache, we can see that the file to be printed is only 12k. Also, printing a document with the same size from a Windows-program on the same printer using the same file-and printer server only takes a few seconds.

Can anyone help with this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Jeroen
