Expunging Messages

Probably a dumb question but....

When is a message physically removed from the disk? For example a user marks a message for deletion in Iplanet Web Messenger. This actions places the email in the Trash folder. At 11:00pm the cleanup process runs, should the email be deleted at that point? (Assume that the email is only referenced by the user who deleted it).

Or, does the user have to empty the Trash folder to delete the mail from the system, and then cleanup again at 11:00pm.

Or, does there need to be an aging rule in place for deletion of mail from the Trash folder?
