I just joined new company and incumbent oracle DBA confessed they have never used rman in all their many years as an Oracle DBA. They currently have 7 days worth of export dmp files for each prod database. I've begun creating rman backups for each prod dB and I've asked if we can stop doing the exports altogether. Incumbent DBA says the exports are still needed in case we ever need to restore a table or in case we need to refresh a dev/test environment. I submit that rman can do this and I communicated that I've only ever used exports in an ad hoc or as needed case either to move an oracle dB between differing operating systems or incompatible versions. Does everyone export their production databases nightly? I've been an Oracle DBA since 10g but I've always been the sole oracle DBA in shops/companies I've worked in. This is the first time I've had an experienced DBA to work with. I'm actually kind of surprised my coworker has never used rman being that they are so vastly experienced. Digging deeper they say they have used NetApp as their backup methodology and they are trying to get it configured at my present company which I am told will make rman irrelevant. What do you think?
