Existing database ran out of memory but now seeing ora-27100 error

I have a large database that started showing the following error
ORA-27102: out of memory
OSD-00022: Message 22 not found; product=RDBMS; facility=SOSD
When I tried to to increase the shared pool size and windows memory and then restarted the database - the following error showed:
ORA-27100: shared memory realm already exists. I have tried a shutdown and startup force from the command line level but that didn't work. Please help!
