I am working on SQL performance tuning. I came across a peculiar behavior with UNION. I have two SELECT statements. Each one is taking less than a minute. They are big selects with more than 15 tables joined and some of the tables are 20 GB in size. But when I combine these two with union the execution time is jumping to 4 hours. What could be the reason? Please provide your views on this.
