Exception In Trigger: How to display custom message ?

I am trying to raise and exception in a trigger and want the front to "see" a custom message.
For e.g. On a duplicate record i.e. DUP_VAL_ON_INDEX
I want a custom message to be passed backed to the front end.
Right now it is the standard message.
Please advice on any documentaion, technique
I am a little new to ORACLCE DB.
Any and all hepl is appreciated
