'/etc/oraInventory' error

hi,
when i tired to install Oracle 10 g on linux red hat 4.i got error
i logged on to oracle user give the necessary privileges ,but i got error.

You do not have sufficient permissions to access the inventory *'/etc/oraInventory'*. Installation cannot continue. Make sure that you have read/write permissions to the inventory directory and restart the installer.: Permission denied
