/etc/nsswitch.conf is being ignored, I cannot ping anything in /etc/hosts

Hi all,

I am running OUL 6.2 , this is uname output:

Linux jackstestbox.com 2.6.32-300.3.1.el6uek.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 9 18:57:35 EST 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

For some reason even though I have files before dns in nsswitch.conf , I cannot ping or in any way resolve to what is in the hosts file!
