Estimating Size of Backup Sets/Files

437871Jul 13 2005 — edited May 17 2006
Hi,

Is there a way to see how much space a full backup from RMAN will take up on the disk drive? Or is there there a way or a rule of thumb to best estimate the size of a full backup from RMAN? I am trying to estimate the size that I will need on the server to perform full backups and incremental backups. My jobs currently are erroring out due to not enough space and I have about 6gb’s free, so I know I need more. The full backup that I performed did not include the archived logs, but I would like to but I don’t know what size I will need.

Also, after a full backup has been completed, and I perform a incremental backup (Level 1) the next day, is it going to overwrite what is has to for the backup or will create a whole new backup set thus needing more space on the server? This I am a little confused about.

Can someone please help out a DBA who is a little lost in the backup and recovery world?
