Error: Java is undefined

I have a number of new html web pages that work fine in Firefox 1.0.4, however on the same PC in IE 6 they fail with an error message "Java is undefined". The failing statement is:
var1 = java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit ().
All the options for Java are turned on in IE. The OS is Windows 2000 SP4. Could someone enlighten me on why this is happening and what to do to fix it.
