error: Could not get shadow information for NOUSER keep appearing in logs

Hello all, first time post! For a few weeks now I've been getting the following errors in my logs:

error: Could not get shadow information for NOUSER

unfortunately there is no IP logged like similar posts that I've viewed through google. I've also tried to research ssh to obtain a more detailed log message but have been unsuccessful. I would like to know two things.

1. What's causing these messages? (attempted pw guessing from a machine infected with a worm or similar?)
2. What can I do to prevent whatever is causing them?
