Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request

We were trying to upgrade our oracle DB server from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.5 by installing the upgrade patch from metalink. During the installation, it prompted for many missing DLL(s) which we chose to ignore and tried to continue installation which went unsuccessfully.
Assuming it did not patch the DB we tried to restart the services back again. But listenere and oracle services could not be restarted. It gave us following error.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

We tried to reconfigure the oracle listener again but no luck and services would not start too. We tried all possible ways but the database is not getting back to normal mode

Any idea how do we restore it back or at least to the point it restarts the database? What does this error mean? Tried to google but no luck
