Environment Variables for AIX5L

I'm new to AIX and I'm not certain from the documentation what environment variables are required for AIX and what those values for those variables hould be. For example:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, CLASSPATH, LIBPATH.

Additionally when I run opatch to apply the critical updates I get a fatal error and lots of warnings, is that related to missing environment variables?
