Encoded special characters in select lists in APEX 4

A question. In APEX 3.2, I had a special select list that included spaces (encoded as an HTML hard space character) to indent lines and various encoded HTML graphics characters to give the select list a distinctive hierarchical look for an office hierarchy. In APEX 4, the special codes are no longer translated in HTML so I no longer get the special look the drop down list had before. Now you actually see all the encoding.

I did see the note in the Release Notes that said that select list items "will now always escape the values contained in the list." Does anyone in the forum know of an alternative way to do this in APEX 4?
